Our basic expectations for soil are distorted by the degraded state of many agricultural soils. We should aim to improve "Soil Health", defined as the continued capacity of a soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and people. However, published explanations and guidance focus on cover crops and reduced tillage on crop farms. The four major recommendations are to disturb the soil less, keep it covered, grow roots throughout the year, and diversify crops and rotations. How can we take these soil health concepts and apply them to improve soil health on grazing farms and pastures?
